Data Collection and Its Purpose

Comments

When visitors post comments on our site, we gather the information displayed in the comment form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string for spam detection purposes.

We may create an anonymized string from your email address (a hash) and provide it to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy can be found here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture will be publicly visible alongside your comment.

Media

If you upload images to our site, avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract location data from images on the website.

Cookies

When you leave a comment on our site, you can opt-in to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. This is for your convenience, so you don’t have to fill in your details again for future comments. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit our login page, a temporary cookie will be set to check if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set up several cookies to save your login information and screen display preferences. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. Selecting “Remember Me” will keep you logged in for two weeks. Logging out will remove the login cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser, containing no personal data and indicating the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

Embedded Content

Articles on this site may feature embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves the same as if you visited those websites directly. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Data Sharing Data Retention

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely to recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For users who register on our site, we store the personal information they provide in their user profile. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except for their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Your Data Rights

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request the deletion of any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are required to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
